Human Intelligence: The Better Alternative to AI

Memorial Day is a day to honor those who have devoted their lives to create a world where you have the freedom to pursue your dreams and live the life you want to live. To restate, these men and women have given their lives for you to be here today, so what are you going to do in your life that makes their sacrifice worthwhile?

What AI Can’t Do

What makes you significant, versus IBM’s Watson, is your ability to interpret mass amounts of information and be able to explain how it can provide value to you and those around you. This is not something that machines can do. They cannot relate, they cannot empathize, and they do not understand the emotions that a real life experience creates.

This means that YOU are MUCH better at identifying and creating value than a machine. Yes, we can use machine learning to acquire artificial intelligence, but your human intelligence is what is needed to accelerate the value that technology can create for your organization.

Reinventing Your Role/Organization

Although there continues to be much talk about Artificial Intelligence and the Fourth Revolution, there seems to be a core theme that is consistently being missed. In Reinventing Jobs: A 4-Step Approach for Applying Automation to Work, they actually do a good job of describing the Workplace of Tomorrow and what organizations will need to do to adapt.

“Automation reinvents organizations, just as it reinvents jobs.“

Understanding the resources that you have within your organization and aligning the types of work with the appropriate people (or machines) that should be doing it, allows your organization to maximize the resources within it. Those with higher level skills and more experience should be proactively working on the business, in order to free up more time within the organization, which then can also be reallocated. Personal development and increasing your individual value should be a top priority throughout the organization.

Create Your Future

Technology is capable of just about anything. Your ability to leverage it as a tool to create your own future will depend on how you spend your time. Will you spend your time doing work that is meant for technology to do? Or will you leverage the time that technology can create and become intentional about creating your future?

If you are a football fan, you have probably watched a replay of your favorite team on the NFL Network. If you haven’t, they shrink what was a 3 hour football game into a 30 minute replay, by cutting out all of the time that is lost in between each play.

How much time do you spend each day searching for what to do? For many of us, you probably spend a very small percentage of your time doing actual work (remember Office Space). More importantly, the type of work you do is most likely not maximizing the value that you can provide.

The best way to honor a fallen veteran is to make your life worth their sacrifice.
